Cell Phone Device Can See Cells

Cell Phone Device Can See Cells
Dec-20-12
A new device designed to turn smartphones into powerful microscopes allows students to capture their own microscopic images for study and sharing.

Invented by Daniel Fletcher of the University of California, Berkeley, the CellScope microscope features a special cradle that can hold an iPhone and is able to magnify images from 40x to 120x. Images are captured and viewed via the phone’s camera app and can be displayed in real time on the phone’s touch screen. Images can also be displayed simultaneously for discussion or geotagged and uploaded to a map.

The Fletcher Lab believes the CellScope will be particularly useful in schools that are not able to afford an individual microscope for each student.
