ChemoFilter Keeps Chemo Drugs from Spreading

ChemoFilter Keeps Chemo Drugs from Spreading
Jun-09-16
The ChemoFilter is able to prevent chemotherapy drugs from dispersing throughout the body, offering significant improvements in patient comfort.

The filter was developed by Dr. Steven Hetts of UC San Francisco, and is based on the knowledge that many chemo drugs carry a positive charge. The sponge-like filter is made out of two polymers—one that carries a negative charge—and can be injected into the body just downstream of the tumor being treated. Once in place, the ChemoFilter will attract the negatively charged chemo drugs before they can circulate in the bloodstream.
