Circuit Board Separates in Hot Water

Circuit Board Separates in Hot Water
Nov-02-12
In an effort to reduce the waste from electronic gadgets, researchers have created a circuit board that will break down when immersed in hot water, releasing its electronics for re-use.

Developed by the National Physical Laboratory in the UK, the board is made up of “unzippable polymeric layers.” The layers are able to tolerate damp heat stressing and extended thermal cycling, yet they will separate from each other when exposed to hot water. This allows the components to be scraped off fully intact to be used again.

In tests, 90 percent of the original circuit board was able to be re-used, compared to the 2 percent of conventional boards.
