Cleaning Orbit with Magnetic Space Tugs

Cleaning Orbit with Magnetic Space Tugs
Jun-30-17
Magnetic tugs orbiting in space could be used to collect decrepit satellites and space junk.

The project, being investigated by the ESA, would rely on magnetic fields created by super-cooling superconducting wires. By attracting and repelling the satellite with magnets, the space tugs could remain at a safe distance while still guiding the debris into the desired location.
