Color-Changing Batteries Ensure Optimal Pressure

Color-Changing Batteries Ensure Optimal Pressure
May-31-18
Color-changing compression bandages that detect pressure help ensure the bandage is applied for the optimal treatment.

Some conditions, such as venous ulcers, are treated with compression bandages that are wrapped tightly around the limb to help stimulate blood flow. To help caregivers wrap the bandages most effectively, the team at MIT has woven their pressure-sensing photonic fibers into a standard compression bandage. The fibers will change color as the bandage is stretched, indicating the specific pressure and offering a guide to caregivers. Once in place, the fibers can function as a continuous pressure sensor—allowing both the patient and caregivers to ensure the correct pressure is maintained.
