Composite metal foams able to block high explosive blast pressures offer more protection than any other armor material currently known.
The study, conducted by teams from North Carolina State University and the US Army’s Aviation Applied Technology Directorate, demonstrated that steel-CMF materials perform much better than current military vehicle armor made of rolled steel. The material not only stopped fragments, but also blocked blast waves that can cause brain injuries while weighing significantly less than current armor options.
The team now plans to test the CMF material against improvised explosive devices and high-caliber, mounted ballistics.
Could that foam be runny and magnetic or other way self-organizing? Armor would be adapted case by case, explosions happen outside of vehicle and holes be filled automatically. Also clothes might have adjustable and movable protection. Posted by Uolevi Kattun on March 29, 2018
