Concept Device Harvests Energy from Tires

Concept Device Harvests Energy from Tires
Jul-25-19
An innovative device embedded in standard car tires can harvest frictional energy to power the vehicle’s onboard components.

The energy harvester was created by a team from Sumitomo Rubber and Kansai University, and could be installed inside conventional tires. The device contains two layers of rubber covered in an electrode with a layer of negatively charged film and positively charged film sandwiched between. As the tire deforms from the pressure of rolling along the road, the generated static electricity can be harnessed to power components such as tire pressure monitors and other small electronics.
