An on-skin air conditioner that helps keep the wearer cool while also monitoring vital signs could reduce instances of dehydration and heatstroke.
The wearable air conditioner is being developed by a team at the University of Missouri with an eye towards soldiers in the field, where heatstroke is a common danger. Designed to be worn on the skin, the breathable, waterproof device requires no electricity, and works via passive cooling by reflecting sunlight from the body while still allowing body heat to dissipate—providing about 11°F of cooling. At the same time, the system can also monitor blood pressure, electrical activity of the heart, and skin hydration.
The device is currently wired, but the team is working to develop a smaller, wireless version that could be incorporated into clothing.
