Copper-Based Smog Vacuum

Copper-Based Smog Vacuum
Oct-22-13
A new “electronic vacuum cleaner’ for urban smog could help address some of the serious pollution issues in large cities.

Designed by Daan Roosegaarde, the device features copper coils that create an electrostatic field able to attract smog particles. The coils would be buried in a large area, such as a park, causing the smog particles to drop to the ground and providing pocket of clean air for people to breathe. The coils are completely safe, and the smog particles can be collected from the ground for disposal. According to the designer, the smog vacuum can create holes of fresh air between 165 and 190 feet in diameter. It does not solve the smog problem, but it does provide temporary relief.

The system is planned to be installed in Beijing after undergoing a year or so of refinements.
