Researchers have created a new keyboard flexible and strong enough to be crumpled to fit in a pocket.
The inexpensive keyboard prototype is made up of a sheet of Ecoflex silicon rubber that has been embedded with piezoresistive carbon nanotubes. Pressing one of the keys drawn on the material will alter the electrical resistance of the underlying nanotubes, while the keyboard’s artificial neural network allows the device to recognize which letter or character is being indicated, based on its location.
According to the team, the keyboards would cost only about a dollar to manufacture.
