Crystal Spheres Offer Effective Drug Delivery

Crystal Spheres Offer Effective Drug Delivery
Feb-06-16
By growing crystals in a spherical shape, researchers may have created a new way to deliver drugs more effectively inside the body.

Christopher Li of Drexel University grew the nano-scale crystal balls by containing water within bubbles of oil. When the bubbles were cooled, the water within crystalized into hollow spheres of ice. These “crystalsomes” (so called because of their similarity to liposomes) could one day be used to deliver payloads of drugs within the body, and have shown to be sturdier than liposomes themselves.
