Cuddlebot Encourages Therapeutic Petting

Cuddlebot Encourages Therapeutic Petting
Feb-12-13
More than a fuzzy robot, the Cuddlebot can differentiate between different touch gestures and respond in different ways.

Created by Anna Flagg, the Cuddlebot features a wired mat of fur atop a piezoelectric sheath. The fur and sheath allow the bot to recognize nine different touches, such as scratching and tickling, to which the bot responds in different ways. Over time, the Cuddlebot will even learn to recognize who is touching it.

The initial goal of the Cuddlebot project was to determine if a machine could learn to infer emotions from gestures, which could lead to the generation of robotic, therapeutic companions. In tests with kids (and perhaps Star Trek fans?), the bot was a big success.
