Researchers have created an innovative, insect-inspired drone able to recover from collisions and crashes and then resume flight.
The quadcopter drone features a rigid center with a flexible fiberglass frame able to withstand impacts without damage. The drone’s four arms attach to the frame with magnetic joints, which will separate from the body in a collision (preventing permanent damage), while remaining sturdy enough for flight. Once the drone has come to a stop after the impact, the magnetic connections will be pulled back into place by elastic bands, allowing the drone to reform and continue on its mission.
