Deep Optics Glasses Change Focus Automatically

The eyeglasses from Deep Optics can focus automatically in real time, offering an alternative to bifocals as well opening the door to more comfortable virtual reality headsets.

The glasses are equipped with a transparent liquid-crystal layer that will change its refractive index when an electric current is passed through it. In their normal state (not controlled electronically) the glasses will focus on the far distance. However, when the eye-tracking sensors on the glasses determine that the user is looking at an object up close, an onboard processor will trigger the current to adjust the focus accordingly, up to three diopters. The technology could also find its way into virtual reality headsets, allowing the eyes to focus more naturally and reducing the nausea some people experience when using the headsets.

A working prototype of the lenses has been developed, but the company still needs to make the components small enough to work as eyeglasses.
