Dental Retainer Coating Repels Bacteria

Dental Retainer Coating Repels Bacteria
May-30-18
A coating for dental aligners reduces bacteria growth on the devices by up to 75 percent.

The anti-bacterial material is made up of a polymer sheet coated with glycol and layers of carboxymethylcellulose and chitosan. Because the coating is hydrophilic, it attracts water while preventing bacteria from attaching. In addition to repelling bacteria, the coating makes the plastic stronger and better able to withstand degradation from saliva and acidic solutions.
