Detecting Ice-Buried Meteorites

Detecting Ice-Buried Meteorites

Advanced, towable metal detectors could help locate iron-heavy Antarctic meteorites.

Antarctica is one of the best places to look for meteorites, but the darker, iron-heavy ones tend to absorb heat and sink into the ice, making them much harder to find. To aid in their discovery, the team from the University of Manchester developed a small, powerful metal detector that can be towed behind a snowmobile to locate these meteorites beneath the ice.

The team recently tested their detector at the UK Arctic research station, with a main expedition planned in early 2020.
