Detecting Osteoporosis Before the First Fracture

Detecting Osteoporosis Before the First Fracture
Sep-20-13
A new device that uses a tiny needle to check bone density could help physicians diagnose osteoporosis sooner, before the individual suffers a fracture.

Created by teams from the University of California, Santa Barbara and further developed at the University of Southampton, the device features a tiny needle that is pushed into the bone. By measuring how deeply the needle is able to penetrate, the medical staff can determine the extent of osteoporosis in different areas and the risk of an imminent fracture.

Drugs can slow the development of osteoporosis, but usually patients don’t even know they are suffering from the disease until they experience their first fracture.
