Diagnosing Diseases with a Drop of Blood

Diagnosing Diseases with a Drop of Blood
Nov-13-14
The winner in this year's Nokia Sensing X Challenge, the rHealth device can diagnose illnesses in just minutes from a single drop of blood.

The rHealth was created by a team from the DNA Medical Institute, who developed a way to shrink the components so that the device could fit in the palm of the hand. Once a drop of blood has been dropped into the unit, it mixes with nanostrips and reagents before being sent through a tiny mixer and past an array of lasers. As the lasers beam light onto the blood, the blood's signature can be identified by interpreting how it reacts to the laser light. The technology can identify a range of illnesses, from the flu to Ebola, within minutes.
