Researchers have developed a way to prevent the transmission of certain inherited diseases by discarding the mitochondria that carries the disease information.
The method, developed at Oregon Health and Science University, involves transplanting the nucleus of the mother’s egg cell into a donor egg, which replaces the original mitochondria with a new, less-risky version. Because the method is compatible with freezing, the mother and donor do not have to ovulating in sync.
The United Kingdom is currently considering using the therapy for patients at risk of mitochondria-based diseases, which include deafness, diabetes, heart disease and dementia.
