Disney researchers have developed a wireless power transmission technology that could turn an entire room into a charging station.
The technology from the Disney Research team overcomes two challenges to wireless charging: range and safety concerns. To create the proof of concept charging system, the team used Quasistatic Cavity Resonance (QSCR) to induce electric currents in an enclosed metallic structure—in this case, a specially designed room surrounded by aluminum panels with a copper pole running from the floor to the ceiling. When the current travels through the pole and surrounding walls, floor and ceiling, a magnetic field forms, circulating around the pole.
According to the team, “By coupling a coil receiver to the magnetic field, power can be provided nearly anywhere in the room.”
