Disposable Sensors Detect Diseases by Breath

Disposable Sensors Detect Diseases by Breath
May-21-17
Researchers have developed inexpensive, disposable sensors able to detect organic compounds in breath that could be used at home to diagnose disease.

The organic semiconductors, developed by a team from the University of Illinois, can detect organic compounds at much lower levels than was previously possible. This was accomplished by printing tiny pores into the device, which exposed the reactive sites and enabled the device to sense compounds as low as one part per billion.

As a proof-of-concept, the team created sensor able to detect ammonia in breath, which is an indicator of kidney disease.
