Dissolvable Brain Electrodes

Dissolvable Brain Electrodes
May-24-16
Researchers have created dissolvable silicon electrodes that can be implanted in the brain, and then be flushed out of the body once their task is completed.

Created by teams from the University of Pennsylvania and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the electrodes are based on John A. Rogers’s work in flexible electronics. The electrodes are made of layers of molybdenum and silicon, and were proven to be able to measure electrophysiological signals as well—or better than—conventional electrodes. The electrodes will also dissolve over time, with the rate dictated by the thickness of the layers, eliminating the need to remove the implants through surgery.
