Dragonfly Brains Inspire Smarter Self-Driving Cars

Dragonfly Brains Inspire Smarter Self-Driving Cars
Jul-28-17
A new machine vision system inspired by dragonfly eyes could help improve the safety of self-driving cars.

The machine vision system, from a team at University of Adelaide and Lund University, is based on the ability of the dragonfly to anticipate movement. Being tested in a small robot in Adelaide, the system draws on neurons in the dragonfly’s brain called Small Target Motion Detectors (STMD), which are able to predict the trajectory of prey.

The team hopes to mimic the properties of the STMD neurons in new AI vision for driverless cars.
