The smart DRESS dresser offers dementia patients more dignity by guiding them in getting dressed.
Developed by a diverse team of researchers, the prototype DRESS (Development of a Responsive Emotive Sensing System) device is made up of five drawers, a tablet, camera and motion sensor. Designed to be used by patients with caregivers, the DRESS is first loaded by the caregiver, with each drawer holding a single item of clothing in the order to be put on. After the caregiver leaves the room, a vocal cue in their voice will prompt the patient to open the first drawer, which will also light up. As the patient follows the prompts and puts on the items in order, the system will monitor their progress to offer encouragement or corrections, and well as track stress levels.
For people with dementia, getting dressed is one of the more stressful activities of the day, for both the patient and the caregiver. According to Dr. Winslow Burleson of NYU, “… the DRESS prototype has the potential to provide automated dressing support to assist people with dementia in maintaining their independence and privacy, while alleviating the burden on caregivers.”
