An innovative drone system able to differentiate living bodies from the dead could prove invaluable in search and rescue missions.
The tech was developed by teams from the University of South Australia and Middle Technical University using onboard software that analyzes the drone’s video footage. The footage, which can be shot at distances up to 26 feet, is then analyzed by the software to detect the minute movements of the torso that indicate breathing. The new system is an improvement over tech that relies on body temperature or changes in skin tone, which can be obscured by clothing or require the victim be in a specific position.
