Drug-Embedded Dentures Fight Infection

Drug-Embedded Dentures Fight Infection
Apr-26-18
Researchers have created 3D-printed dentures that can treat and prevent fungal infections.

Denture wearers often suffer from denture-related stomatitis, which can cause redness and inflammation in the mouth. To offer an easier way to avoid such infections, the 3D-printed dentures from the team at the University of Buffalo are embedded with microscopic capsules that periodically release the anti-fungal medication Amphotericin B. The medication helps prevent infection while the dentures are being worn, offering continuous protection, and could prove particularly useful to people that are susceptible to infection—such as the elderly or disabled.
