Dyed Contact Lenses Treat Color Blindness

Dyed Contact Lenses Treat Color Blindness
May-01-18
Researchers have created dyed contact lenses that could help correct some types of color blindness.

Developed by a team from the University of Birmingham, the contacts could help treat red and green CVD, a common type of colorblindness that causes those two colors to appear a similar yellow-brown. To help address this issue, the team coated the contacts with a non-toxic, low-cost dye that will absorb specific wavelengths of light to allow either the red- and green-sensitive cones to more easily differentiate between the colors.

Although there are glasses, such as EnChroma, that also help correct CVD, the contacts are less expensive and easier to use, and can even be worn with prescription lenses.
