A new system able to detect E. coli bacteria in water in just minutes could provide an inexpensive, early warning system for people living in rural communities.
The filter, created by a team from the University of Alberta, is able to detect E. coli in only a few minutes, rather than the 24 to 48 hours required by conventional methods. The sensor is located in a filter that traps the E.coli and will change color in the presence of the bacteria, providing an easy-to-read warning of the contaminated water.
The research team is also working on a way to enable the device to send ‘E.coli detection’ text message alerts in the local language to health workers and people in the community who rely on the water for drinking.
