Eco-Friendly Anti-Biofouling Paint Repels Barnacles

Eco-Friendly Anti-Biofouling Paint Repels Barnacles
Dec-06-17
An innovative new anti-biofouling ship paint from Phi-Stone makes removing barnacles as easy as simply wiping them away.

Typical anti-biofouling paints rely on toxins that kill the bacteria—and eventually find their way into the water. In contrast, the new paint from Kiel University and the spinoff Phi-Stone is made up of a polymer composite of specially formed ceramic particles and polythiourethane (PTU). The paint prevents the barnacles from developing a permanent foothold, allowing those that do manage to attach to be easily dislodged without damaging the paint.
