Eco-Friendly Hair Dye from Blackcurrants

Colorful hair dyes made from blackcurrant skins could offer a non-toxic alternative to current dye chemicals.

While playful colors like pink and blue are becoming more popular as hair dyes, they also contain environmentally unfriendly chemicals. As an alternative, the team from the University of Leeds extracted the anthocyanin pigment from waste blackcurrant skins discarded by the juice industry. Those pigments were then purified to create a dye paste in a variety of red and violet hues that will retain its color for up to twelve shampoos.
