The Eco-Mobius modular phone concept could help to reduce electronic waste by allowing the user to upgrade it by swapping the modules instead of buying a completely new phone.
Designed by a group from ZTE Corporation, the phone is made up of four separate units—the battery, core, display and camera. The phone’s CPU, GPU, RAM and ROM are contained in the core module, and the modules are attached by sliding them along tracks where they are held in place by magnets.
According to the developers, a person wanting a differnt CPU, for example, could go to an online trading platform and find a list of users selling a faster CPU. The user could select a new module for purchase, and then sell their old CPU to another person. In another example, a photographer could carry different camera modules around with them for different shooting conditions.
