A newly developed variety of cotton seed isn't toxic to humans like other varieties, and they are packed with protein.
Usually cotton seeds contain a toxic organic compound called gossypol which is toxic to human red blood cells, causing anemia and even death if consumed.
Researchers have now engineered a variety called TAM66274 which lacks gossypol and is therefore safe to eat, while leaving the plant's ability to product cotton fiber unaffected.
