The Ekano concept is an affordable, portable, suitcase-sized surgical system that could make laparoscopic surgery more accessible in rural and developing areas.
Created by a team from Cambridge University, the Ekano concept is designed to be self-contained, and can even be mounted on an IV pole to save space in the operating room. Since surgical planning and outcome tracking systems are rare in poorer hospitals, the system creates a WiFi hotspot that lets the surgical team upload images and share data with their phones, even allowing them to collaborate on difficult cases. Other cost-saving features include a single-chip sensor augmented with image processing, a compact LED array, and interchangeable tips.
