Elastic Hydrogel Offers New Wound Treatment

Elastic Hydrogel Offers New Wound Treatment
Jul-08-15
A protein-based gel able to mimic the elasticity of human tissue when exposed to light could provide a new way to treat injured tissue.

Created by a team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the hydrogel (referred to as a photocrosslinkable elastin-like polypeptide-based (ELP) hydrogel), features molecules that will bind together when exposed to light. This binding process increases the strength of the gel to the point that its elasticity will surpass that of arterial tissue in the body. The gel can be fine-tuned to meet certain needs, and will dissolve harmlessly in the body over time.
