Electric Bandage Fights Biofilms

Nov-07-17 A surgical dressing able to fight infections with electricity could help burn wounds heal faster.

The dressing, from a team at the Wexner Medical Center, was created to help fight drug-resistant bacteria and their production of wound biofilm material. Building on the research of Dr. Chandan Sen, who led the study, the wireless electric dressing is embedded with silver and zinc that were printed on the material. When the dressing is moistened, it will generate a weak electrical field able to both prevent and fight bacterial biofilm in wounds.
