Electro-Bandage Breaks up Biofilms

Electro-Bandage Breaks up Biofilms
May-20-19
An innovative bandage that fights biofilms with electricity could help reduce infection in wounds.

Developed by a team from Indiana University, the dressing will generate one volt of electricity electrochemcially when it comes in contact with body fluids. The small volt of electricity will not hurt the patient, but it will disturb the biofilm created by the bacteria and help destroy the infection.

According to Chandran Sen, PhD, "This has implications across surgery as biofilm presence can lead to many complications in successful surgical outcomes. Such textile may be considered for serving as hospital fabric—a major source of hospital-acquired infections."
