EV Battery Built Into Car's Body

EV Battery Built Into Car's Body

Volvo has developed a new concept that could improve the efficiency of electric cars by integrating the battery components into the car’s structure.

Volvo’s concept for lightweight structural energy storage components makes use of a material made up of carbon fibers, nano-structured batteries and super capacitors. A combination of carbon fibers and polymer resin contain the battery and also function as the car’s body panels, and the super capacitors are integrated into the skin of the component, reducing the car’s weight by up to 15 percent. The battery material can be recharged in the conventional ways: by plugging into the grid or by harnessing the energy created when the car brakes.
