Exoskeleton Gives Seniors a Boost

Exoskeleton Gives Seniors a Boost
Dec-18-19
A lightweight exoskeleton designed for seniors could help people remain active as they age.

The exoskeleton was created by teams from UTHealth and The City University of New York to help mobile seniors walk for longer distances, and weighs about 60 percent less than conventional exoskeletons. Integrated motors in the device will respond to the wearer’s leg motions to offer a gentle boost, providing assistance without forcing a pre-defined path.

According to Asst. Prof. Shuo-Hsiu (James) Chang,"Despite the advancement of exoskeletons, state-of-the-art exoskeletons are not suitable to promote independence and community living. There is a pressing need for wearable robots that can improve the quality of life for broader populations in community settings."
