Eye-Tracking Headset Offers Better Control

Eye-Tracking Headset Offers Better Control
Jul-05-18
An innovative ‘point of gaze’ eye-tracking system could give people with limited mobility a new level of control.

Typical eye tracking systems that allow the user to interact with a computer are limited in that they are difficult to calibrate and a bit slow to respond. As a more powerful alternative, the team from the University of Texas at Arlington developed a revolutionary new system that relies on a forward-facing 3D depth-mapping camera and dual eye-tracking devices aimed at the user’s eyes. The camera’s collected data is used to create a computer-generated 3D map, which can be combined with the eye-tracking information to determine where the wearer is looking more quickly and accurately.

Theoretically, the system could eventually allow the user to control an electric wheelchair or robotic arm simply by looking at the particular object.
