Faster, Cheaper Virus Detection Technology

Faster, Cheaper Virus Detection Technology
Mar-15-16
A new, quicker method of detecting viruses can deliver results within a few hours, and costs only a few dollars per sample to perform.

Developed by a team from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the new detection method replaces the conventional genetic analysis with and optical method called upconversion luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET). This new process reduces the testing time from one to three days down to two to three hours, and also costs 80 percent less than current processes. The method can be used to detect different kinds of viruses, and can also be used more easily in the field and on-site.
