Bandages made of collagen derived from fish scales could speed wound healing.
Collagen is used already in wound-healing dressings, but it is currently obtained from mammals such as pigs and cows, which has cultural drawbacks.
Researchers at Nanyang Technological University have demonstrated that the collagen derived from fish scales can promote wound healing as well, while also ferrying drugs to the wound site. Not only is fish scale-derived collagen much cheaper to obtain, it also seems to perform better at encouraging blood vessel formation than its mammalian counterparts.
