Fish Scales Inspire Protective Gloves

Fish Scales Inspire Protective Gloves
Jan-28-17
A work glove coating inspired by the scales of the alligator gar offers improved protection from piercing.

Developed over a five-year period, the ceramic coating is the result of careful fish scale studies by the team at McGill University. During their investigation, the team identified the way fish scales move and interact with each other, and also learned that the smaller the scale, the better the piercing protection. They then turned to computer modeling to determine the precise size and placement of the lab-made ceramic tiles, creating a protective glove layer that outperforms current options.
