FitnessSHIRT Optimizes Workouts

FitnessSHIRT Optimizes Workouts
Dec-19-13
Get the most out of your workout with the FitnessSHIRT, a smart shirt that gathers detailed information about the wearer’s exertion level to help encourage an optimal workout.

Developed by researchers at Fraunhofer, the shirt is embedded with an array of sensors that measure changes in heart rate, breathing and pulse. The information can be uploaded wirelessly, and then used to track the wearer’s physical output.

To demonstrate the shirt’s abilities, the research team paired the technology with the MENTORbike project, which uses performance data from the wearer’s body, exercise bike and smartphone sensors to stabilize the workout. In tests, the system analyzed the wearer’s output while riding the bike and then adjusted the bike’s motor to eliminate over- or under-exertion. Along with helping athletes achieve their performance goals, the FitnessSHIRT could also benefit rehabilitation patients, particularly those with cardiovascular disease, by allowing them to exercise more confidently.
