The Flare smart bike light invention helps bikers create a cooperative map of road dangers like potholes and traffic.
Developed by Jake Thompson, a student at the University of Sussex, the water-resistant Flare light illuminates the road for 2.5 hours with 300 lumens in Full Beam mode. Where the Flare really shines, however, is in its ability to allow the rider to drop ‘flares’ and create a map of road dangers. The Flare is equipped with three buttons that can be pressed to identify three different types of road hazards: potholes, closely passing traffic and dangerous intersections. The reported issues and their GPS coordinates are communicated to a paired smartphone app for later uploading to a website, where city officials and riders can see the data on a city map.
From how far can potholes and other road hazards be recognized with technical aids? The better roads, the more especially motorbikes would benefit to be warned proactively. Posted by Uolevi Kattun on April 20, 2018
