FlatCam Sensor Replaces Lenses

FlatCam Sensor Replaces Lenses
Nov-25-15
The FlatCam sensor from the team at Rice University replaces the traditional camera lens with a sensor no thicker than a dime.

Inspired by the design of the pinhole camera, the FlatCam sensor features a “grid-like coded mask” that sits next to the sensor. Each hole in the grid functions as a different aperture, and a specialized computer algorithm coverts the information into an image that can be focused to different depths of field after processing.
