A flexible new battery able to bend without loss of conductivity could help power the new generation of electronic wearables.
Developed by the team at ETH Zurich, the prototype thin-film features a layer of silver ‘scales’ that will remain in contact even as the battery bends—ensuring connectivity is not lost. The key to the battery’s design, however, is its water-based gel electrolyte, which is safer and more environmentally friendly than conventional liquid electrolytes. According to the team, the non-toxic battery is also easier to work with, and could be sewn directly into clothing with minimal risk in the event of battery leakage.
