An innovative floating Deep Farm concept could increase food production in the face of rising sea levels.
Conceived by researchers at Nottingham University, the Deep Farm would consist of large vertical containers submerged near coastal areas. Sealed at the bottom and topped with a dome, the containers would support a variety of crops through either hydroponics or aeroponics, while specialized LEDs deliver the appropriate wavelengths of light. Those same LEDs or solar panels would also produce fresh water for the plants by heating salt water to create vapor, and the controlled environment would allow the plants to grow year-round while also making it easier to control pests and disease.
