Artificial islands from Netherlands researchers could offer a new source of living spaces as sea levels rise.
The islands are being developed by a team from the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN). Based on the principle of floating docks, the artificial island concept envisions giant triangles that would connect to form ‘land masses’ over three miles wide. The floating islands could be used for housing, farms or sustainable energy platforms, offering an alternative source of living and production spaces.
According to project manager Olaf Waals, “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution. An innovative alternative that fits with the Dutch maritime tradition is floating ports and cities.”
