The Foci wearable tracks breathing patterns to help the wearer stay focused.
Developed by the Cambridge startup Foci AI, the small wearable clips to the user’s clothing at the hip where it will detect and monitor breathing patterns. That data is interpreted by the Foci’s specialized machine learning algorithm to determine the wearer’s cognitive state, which in turn is used to create an individualized baseline in about four hours. Using that baseline info, the Foci can then determine if the user is focused and when their focus is broken—sending the data to a paired smartphone as a series of colorful orbs.
According to the team, volunteers using the device have reported that it is helpful to learn to recognize their focus state, and find the best ways to rest and regain their mental clarity.
