A new protein produced by electricity could offer an innovative way to help fight world hunger.
The single-cell protein, which could be used as animal feed, was created in collaboration between Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The process involves placing the basic ingredients of water, carbon dioxide, and microbes in a bioreactor and exposing the mixture to electrolysis. The result is a dried powder made up of 25 percent carbohydrates and 50 percent protein.
